Horween Chromexcel, explained

The short answer:Horween Chromexcel (often shortened to "CXL") is a premium pull-up leathermade by the Horween Leather Company in Chicago, one of the last old-line American tanneries. It is a full-grain leather given a long, labor-intensive combination tannage and stuffed with oils and waxes, which gives it a rich, slightly glossy, "living" finish that shifts color when flexed and ages with wonderful character. It turns up on premium wallets, boots and watch straps because it looks and feels special and wears in beautifully. It costs more, and it is not the most scratch-resistant leather — the marks are part of the look.

What makes Chromexcel special

Two things: the tannage and the pull-up effect. Chromexcel uses a slow combination tannage— both chrome and vegetable methods — over many steps and a couple of weeks, then is hot-stuffed with a blend of natural oils and greases. That oil and wax content creates the signature pull-up: when you bend or press the leather, the oils move and the color lightens at the flex, then settles back. The result is a supple, full-grain leather with real depth and a hand-finished character that mass-produced leather cannot fake. Because it is full-grain, it also develops a genuine patina on top of the pull-up.

How it ages and wears

Chromexcel is made to look better with use, not worse. It scuffs and marks easily because of its soft, oily finish — but most of those marks buff out with a finger or a soft cloth as the oils redistribute, and the ones that stay add to the lived-in character owners prize. Over months and years it darkens, softens further and takes on a glow. If you want a pristine, uniform surface that never changes, CXL is the wrong leather; if you want a wallet that looks more interesting every year, it is one of the best. Chromexcel vs vegetable-tanned

They are often cross-shopped, and the difference is character versus discipline. Pure vegetable-tanned leather is firmer, starts stiffer, holds its shape hard, and patinas by darkening dramatically. Chromexcel, being a combination tannage stuffed with oils, is softer and more supple from the start, with the pull-up color-shift veg-tan does not have — it is the more "lived-in" feeling leather immediately, where veg-tan rewards a longer break-in. Neither is better; CXL suits someone who wants supple character now, veg-tan someone who wants firm structure and the most dramatic aging.
