Who writes it

Stephen V. edits Hide & Thread, and the framing is deliberately modest. Stephen is an enthusiast — someone genuinely into well-made leather and the small, considered objects you carry every day. Not a leatherworker, not a self-described veteran of anything, and not a lab with a drawer of free wallets. What that means in practice is simple: he reads the manufacturers' spec sheets and material documentation, compiles the numbers, does the cost-to-own math, and writes it up plainly. The interest is real; the credentials are not invented. We think a modest, true background beats an impressive, fabricated one every time — the moment a bio overclaims, you should stop trusting everything around it.

Why this site exists

Search "best leather wallet" and you meet a wall of sites that all lead with the same word: tested. Four-person panels, hands-on rigs, wear-time diaries. Some of that testing is real and some of it is marketing, and from the outside you genuinely cannot tell which. We decided not to compete on a claim we cannot honestly make. Instead, Hide & Thread competes on two things a reader can verify: a published, repeatable method for choosing wallets, and cost-to-own transparency — the durability math that tells you what a wallet really costs per year, which almost nobody in this space bothers to show. The claims we refuse to make

Plenty of sites tell you what they did. We would rather be straight about what we did not do, because that is where trust actually lives. So, plainly:

Those zeros are the point, not a gap. Nobody buys a spot on this site, no brand hands us a wallet in exchange for coverage, and no verdict gets softened because it pays better. Which raises the fair question: if you have not personally carried every wallet, why should I trust your picks? Because we do the work anyone can reproduce. We compile the published specifications and dimensions, read the manufacturers' material and warranty documents, compute cost-to-own from price and a realistic lifespan, and synthesize the consensus of verified buyers and the wider EDC community — then we show our sources and stamp our prices with the date you see them. You do not have to take our word for any of it; you can check the numbers.

What "independent" means here

We use the word carefully, because a lot of sites do not. We run no store, so there is nothing of our own to sell you and no inventory to move. We accept no gifted or loaner wallets, because the moment a company hands you a product you stop being a neutral party writing about it. Our only commercial relationship is the Amazon Associates program: when you buy something after clicking one of our links, Amazon pays us a small commission at no extra cost to you. That funds the research; it does not choose the winner.
