Can RFID wallets go through airport security?
The short answer is yes, with zero drama — but there is one small wrinkle with metal wallets, and a stubborn myth about scanners erasing cards that is worth putting to rest.

The short answer: yes.An RFID-blocking wallet goes through airport security exactly like any other wallet, and nothing about the process harms it. The X-ray machine that scans your carry-on does not wipe the chips in your cards or passport, the walk-through and body scanners do not erase anything, and the RFID-blocking layer inside the wallet is completely irrelevant to the Transportation Security Administration — they are not scanning for it and they do not care that it is there. You can keep an RFID wallet in your pocket, drop it in your bag, or set it in the tray, and it will come out the other side unchanged. The only genuinely useful thing to know is a small quirk about metal wallets at the walk-through detector, which we will get to.
This question comes up constantly, and it usually hides two separate worries stacked on top of each other: "will security confiscate or object to my RFID wallet?" and "will the machines at the checkpoint damage the cards inside it?" The answer to both is no. Let us take them in turn, because understanding whyis what lets you stop worrying about it for good — and it clears up a myth that has been floating around since the days of magnetic-stripe hotel keys.
Does airport security care about RFID blocking?
Not in the slightest. RFID blocking is a passive feature — a thin layer of metal or metal-impregnated fabric built into the wallet that stops a nearby reader from wirelessly powering up and reading the chips in your contactless cards. It is not electronic, it has no battery, it emits nothing, and it does not interfere with any security equipment. From the checkpoint's point of view, an RFID wallet is just a wallet. There is no rule against them, no special screening for them, and no reason an officer would ever single one out. Millions of travelers carry them through checkpoints every day without a second glance.

Will the X-ray or scanner damage my cards or passport chip?
No. This is the part people quietly worry about, so it is worth being precise. The carry-on X-ray uses low-dose electromagnetic radiation to image the shapes and densities inside your bag. X-rays do not carry a magnetic field and do not induce one, so they cannot demagnetize a card's magnetic stripe and cannot corrupt the data on a chip. The chip in a modern chip-and-tap card or an e-passport is a tiny integrated circuit that stores data electronically; it is not affected by being imaged, and it has no moving or magnetic parts to disturb. Your cards and passport come out of the X-ray exactly as they went in.
The walk-through metal detector and the millimeter-wave body scanner you stand inside are equally harmless. The walk-through detector senses metal by looking for the way metal objects disturb a low-frequency magnetic field — but sensing metal is not the same as generating a field strong enough to wipe anything, and it does not. The body scanner uses low-energy radio waves to build an outline of what is on your body; it images, it does not erase. There is no station at a normal airport checkpoint that will harm your bank cards, transit cards, hotel keys, or passport chip.
The one real wrinkle: metal wallets can beep
Here is the only practical thing worth adjusting for. If your wallet is itself made of metal — an aluminum cardholder, a machined metal card wallet, a stack of metal plates like the ones on many modern slim wallets — it contains enough metal to potentially trip the walk-through metal detector if you walk through with it in your pocket. To be clear, this is not because it blocks RFID; an all-fabric or all-leather RFID wallet has only a wisp of shielding material and will not beep. It is simply because a solid metal wallet is, well, metal.
This is not a problem, just a minor convenience choice. Most checkpoints ask you to empty your pockets into the tray anyway, so your wallet is usually going through the X-ray in the bin rather than on your body — in which case metal or not makes no difference. If you do tend to keep your wallet on you, and it is a metal one, the frictionless move is to drop it in the tray or your carry-on before you step through the scanner, exactly as you would with keys or a phone. That is the entire "issue": a metal wallet might beep, so put it in the bin. Nobody is going to take it from you.
RFID passport wallets are fine — and can help
A passport wallet or travel wallet with RFID blocking is not only allowed, it is a sensible thing to carry. Modern e-passports contain an RFID chip, and a shielding travel wallet keeps that chip from being read while it is tucked away in your bag or jacket. When you actually reach an automated e-gate or a passport reader, you simply take the passport out and present it, so the shielding never gets in the way of legitimate use — it only blocks casual reads while the document is stowed. A good travel wallet keeps your passport, boarding pass, and a couple of cards organized in one place, which does more for a smooth trip through the airport than any anxiety about the scanners ever could.
Busting the myth: scanners do not demagnetize cards
The belief that airport machines wipe your cards is a leftover from a real but different phenomenon. Magnetic stripes canbe demagnetized — but by strong magnets, not by airport scanners. The classic culprits are things like the magnetic clasp on a bag, magnetized eyeglass cases, or holding a card stripe directly against a strong magnet. Somewhere along the way, "magnets can wipe a stripe" got mangled into "the airport magnetically wipes your cards," and the myth stuck. The checkpoint equipment simply does not produce fields anywhere near strong enough to affect a stripe, and it does nothing at all to chips. Bottom line: pack your RFID wallet however you like, walk through the checkpoint, and forget about it. If it is a metal wallet, drop it in the tray to skip a beep. Nothing at security will wipe, erase, or harm what is inside it.
